1920's Day Nursery

The Grosvenor Museums 1920's NurseryAttitudes were changing after the First World War. Life was more relaxed compared to thirty years before. Servants had virtually disappeared. People were no longer willing to work long hours for very little pay. New jobs were available in shops, offices and factories. Wives were now taking responsibility for looking after the home and the children.

Nurseries located at the top of the house were still common, but now mother played with the children. Mothers provided good role models. Girls were taught to be good mothers and housekeepers. Boys were prepared for the challenges of life.

Toys were meant to be educational not just for fun. They were made from traditional materials such as wood and china. Although some of the toys seem unusual to us spinning tops and wooden hoops - many others have changed little over the years. The building blocks, toy drum and doll's house would not look out of place in a house today.
