Chester Market

The earliest mention of Chester Market was in 1139, but the first shopping charter was officially issued in 1208 when the men of Chester and their heirs' were granted the privilege of sole selling rights, except at the annual fairs which were fair game for all comers.

Henry III confirmed this in 1239, and so it remained right up until the Great Charter of 1506 which also granted Chester its first Mayor.

Chester Market is still an extremely lively and busy covered market in the City Centre, close to the Bus Station and within very easy reach of convenient car parking.

The market has up to 100 stalls operating at any one time and offers shoppers a wealth of choice, with everything from fresh food to toys, soft furnishings and Science Fiction collectables.

There are various markets held in Chester and these are listed below:

Indoor Market

You can find the indoor market in The Forum Shopping Centre, across from TJ Hughes, and opposite the bus station by the Town Hall.

Operating times are:   6 days a week, Monday to Saturday (8.00am - 5.30pm).

Cleanliness of the market is of a very high standard.   General cleaning is carried out by the authority's in-house cleaners every evening, 5 - 6pm, and throughout the day as and when necessary.
