2008 sports awards
The 2008 Chester Annual Sports awards will be taking place on Monday 26th January 09 at Bishops Bluecoat High School. The annual awards help Chester recognise the successes of the individuals, clubs and volunteers that take part in sport within the Chester district.
Chester has produced some outstanding sports stars in the past such as, Beth Tweddle and Tom James and this is the chance to identify stars of the future.

Those making nominations may be contacted by the Awards Panel to obtain further information on the nominee.
In order to reflect the seasonality of some sports, all nominees should be active within the Chester District (December 2007-November 2008).
Nominations can be individuals, clubs or organisations depending on the individual award criteria.
The closing date for nominations is Wednesday 10th December 2008.
Winners will be notified by the Awards Panel.
Full details of the presentation evening will be confirmed at a later date.
On, Monday 21 January 2008 the Chester Sports & Leisure Association, in partnership with Chester Sports Development and Chester School Sport Partnership, held their annual Sports Awards Presentation Evening in Chester Town Hall. The Right Worshipful The Lord Mayor, Councillor Jim Latham was presenting the awards on the night.
The pinnacle of the evening was the presentation of the Lord Mayor's Cup to the Junior Sports Achiever 2007- Tom Allen.

In 2007 he was selected to train on the GB 2012 Olympic Training Squad. For the last 3 years he has been a member of the Welsh National Team and Cheshire County Team and was Chester Champion for 2007. In addition to this he is the Welsh National Junior Record holder for the 1500m freestyle, Welsh National Junior Record holder for the 800m Freestyle and, Ranked no 1 in Great Britain aged 15 for the 1500m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 400 freestyle. In May 2007 he broke an International meet record in Switzerland and is now an ambassador for his country, Wales at International meets. A role model for young swimmers at Buckley and Chester this swimmer has become extremely disciplined having to juggle training and school work.
The Chester School Sport Partnership also recognised two Volunteer Ambassadors from each of the schools in the Partnership where each ambassador received a commemorative certificate. Two of these volunteers, Emma Jones and Stephen Jameson were recognised as Chester District Volunteer Ambassadors for their commitment to the delivery of sport in the local community.

Each school in the Chester District also nominated two School Sports Personality Winners of the School Sports Personality Award, who received a certificate recognising their outstanding achievements.

Other winners on the night included;
Junior Team of the Year- Deeside Orienteering Club.
This award went to a team who this year are the current English Junior Squad Champions in their sport. They are British Champions in both major relay trophies for junior men (under 19 and under 15) and they came third in the U13 age group. They have two British individual champions, and four of the Juniors went on Great Britain tours last summer. Two juniors were also selected to run for Great Britain at the junior European Championships in France.
Community Club of the Year Award - Deva Handball Club.

The winning club this year has had teams compete in competitions all over the UK, including the under 18’s winning an invitation event in Scotland. They also finished 3rd in an open age group Beach Tournament in Weymouth.
The club ran two teams at U13 level who competed in the North West Leagues, the boys U15 team finished runners up and they have entered the Men’s National League Division 2 this year. This is an open age group competition yet the team are mostly still at school. They are currently 2nd in the Western Conference League and hopeful of making the National Play-Offs.
Many male and female players have played at county level, and one of the female players is in a talent ID programme looking at the 2016 Olympic legacy.
The club is keen on development and ran a Level 1 course which resulted in qualifying 21 Level 1 coaches. Several of who are now coaching as volunteers in the District. The club has delivered a variety of primary schools competitions and taster sessions for high schools; and many of the players are delivering sessions in their own high schools to increase the number of people involved with the sport.
Coach of the Year - Stuart Field.
This award went to a coach who spends many hours coaching women’s hockey. His position at the University of Chester is to identify teach and mentor students so they can come to the schools to improve the quality and quantity of sport being delivered.
He is a highly successful coach with good coaching and motivational skills. Two of the 6th form pupils he coaches have received county and international honours. The first eleven who are a very young team, are due to achieve excellent results this season.
He has been into all primary schools teaching multi skills and tag rugby and everybody agrees he is a superb coach whose efforts need to be recognised.
Special Recognition- Patricia Symms
This award is the Ian Tordoff Award for Services to Sport and is awarded to an individual or group for their contribution and lifetime dedication to sport within the Chester District.
Patricia coaches district and county badminton teams in the Chester District. For 32 years she has led the badminton club at Bishop Heber, and she has dedicated herself to running school clubs and holding inter school matches for 35 years.
Patricia’s achievement is the length of dedicated voluntary service to her sport and her school. She is a home economics teacher in school but has put in countless hours to allow hundreds of pupils to further their skills and experiences.
